This lake is a little gem tucked between the more popular Travis and LBJ. The north end is shallow, with grass and flats where topwater and moving baits seem to work best; the lower end is much deeper, where deep cranks and jigs shine along the many ledges and rock cliffs. Docks are a great place to flip under and around for some nice bass. A lot of good quality fish come out of this reservoir, and the recreational traffic is very low - so the fishing is a lot more relaxing throughout the day.

What you'll catch on Lake Marble Falls

Quality largemouth bass are the main draw - in springtime I've seen best-five limits weigh over 30 pounds, so there's always a shot at a big one. Like the rest of the Highland Lakes chain, you'll also find Guadalupe bass, white bass, catfish and panfish like bluegill and crappie. I release the bass; white bass, crappie and catfish are good for the table.

Seasonal patterns on Lake Marble Falls

Spring (Mar-May) - big-limit time

The best window. Bass move shallow on the north-end grass and flats to spawn, and this is when those 30-pound best-five limits show up. Topwater and moving baits get it done.

Summer (Jun-Aug) - split the lake

Work the shallow grass early, then slide to the deeper lower end with cranks and jigs on the ledges and rock cliffs as the day heats up. Docks hold fish all day.

Fall (Sep-Nov) - shallow again

Cooling water pulls fish back to the flats and cover for a comfortable, productive bite with very little traffic.

Winter (Dec-Feb) - deep and slow

The lower-end ledges and rock cliffs hold the better fish; a slow jig or deep crank can turn up a quality bass.

How we fish it

Marble Falls gives us two lakes in one - shallow grass and flats up north for topwater and moving baits, deep ledges and rock cliffs down south for cranks and jigs, and docks throughout to flip. It's a relaxing, low-traffic option that fishes bigger than its size. A great pick for a focused half-day. For more detail, here are the best lures to use on Lake Marble Falls.
