Fayette County is another power-plant lake, and it tends to put out even bigger bass than Bastrop. It has lots of vegetation and timber to hold those big girls, plus old ponds with pond dams and reeds where you can catch some big bass on a frog. There are lots of 3-6 pound fish to be caught with an occasional bigger one, which makes for a really fun lake with both numbers and quality.

What you'll catch on Fayette County

Quality largemouth bass are the draw here - 3-6 pounders are common, with bigger ones mixed in, all well-fed in the vegetation and timber. There are also plenty of other species, including bluegill and catfish that can run a very good size. I release the bass; catfish and panfish are fine for the table.

Seasonal patterns on Fayette County

Spring (and late winter) - early spawn advantage

Because it's a power-plant lake, bass spawn early here - before the other lakes in the region - so Fayette produces well even when it's still cold out. A great option when nothing else is going yet.

Summer (Jun-Aug) - schooling topwater

Bass school up on shad throughout the lake, and a topwater plug can catch a bunch. The frog bite around the old pond dams and reeds is excellent for a bigger fish.

Fall (Sep-Nov) - feeding up

Cooling water keeps the fish active around the timber and vegetation as they chase bait.

Winter (Dec-Feb) - warm-water bite

The plant keeps Fayette fishing through the cold, and you can find bass starting to think about the spawn well ahead of the rest of the region.

How we fish it

Fayette gives us a lot to work with - vegetation, timber, and those old pond dams and reeds that hold big fish on a frog. In summer we get on the shad schools for a topwater blast, and the early spawn makes it a go-to when other lakes are still cold.
