Tips for fishing from the bank
You don't need a boat to catch quality bass around Austin — you just have to fish the right water at the right time. A few things that consistently help:
- Fish early or late. Bass push shallow and close to shore in low light. By midday they slide deeper and out of easy casting range from the bank.
- Work the edges. Points, docks, laydowns, culverts and grass lines near the bank hold fish. Keep moving and cover water rather than sitting in one spot.
- Keep the tackle simple. A soft-plastic worm or a small crankbait covers most bank situations. Downsize your baits when the water is clear.
- Respect the access. Many of these are city or neighborhood ponds — obey posted rules and hours, pack out your trash, and practice catch-and-release so they keep producing.
