These are worth checking from the bank. Conditions change quickly, so treat them as starting points and always follow posted park rules and hours.

Tips for fishing from the bank

You don't need a boat to catch quality bass around Austin — you just have to fish the right water at the right time. A few things that consistently help:

  • Fish early or late. Bass push shallow and close to shore in low light. By midday they slide deeper and out of easy casting range from the bank.
  • Work the edges. Points, docks, laydowns, culverts and grass lines near the bank hold fish. Keep moving and cover water rather than sitting in one spot.
  • Keep the tackle simple. A soft-plastic worm or a small crankbait covers most bank situations. Downsize your baits when the water is clear.
  • Respect the access. Many of these are city or neighborhood ponds — obey posted rules and hours, pack out your trash, and practice catch-and-release so they keep producing.
