Canyon Lake is a good place to go for nice largemouth bass, along with Guadalupe bass, smallmouth bass and some white bass. It has lots of vegetation now and timber to hold those big girls. In tournaments the last few years it's taken over 20 pounds to win, and the hydrilla is the thickest I've ever seen it there - the largemouth are in it good. They also hold on timber, so if there are trees or brush piles around, you need to be fishing them.

What you'll catch on Canyon Lake

Largemouth are my target, and the other species come along while we fish - Guadalupe bass, smallmouth and white bass are all here, and there are striper in the lake too, so an occasional one turns up as a bonus. Canyon is also one of the best places to catch a 'mean mouth' - a hybrid between two black bass species (smallmouth/largemouth, largemouth/Guadalupe, or Guadalupe/smallmouth) - and I've put clients on some of the biggest in the lake. Tell me what you'd like to focus on and we'll go get 'em.

Seasonal patterns on Canyon Lake

Spring (Mar-May) - hydrilla and spawn

Largemouth move into the thick hydrilla and onto timber to spawn, and the white bass start firing up. A great time for both numbers and a quality fish.

Summer (Jun-Aug) - grass, timber and schools

Work the heavy hydrilla and brush piles for largemouth - some of the most productive fishing of the year, with the grass bite going strong.

Fall (Sep-Nov) - feeding frenzy

The bite stays strong as the fish chase shad, and the largemouth feed up around the grass and timber.

Winter (Dec-Feb) - deep and clear

Fish slide deeper on the clear water; a slower approach around timber and structure can produce a quality bass or mean mouth.

How we fish it

The name of the game on Canyon is grass and timber - we pick apart the thick hydrilla and any trees or brush piles for largemouth. If you want to chase a mean mouth, this is the lake for it. Let me know your target and we'll build the day around it. For more detail, here are the best lures to use on Canyon Lake.
